If a specific page on an Internet site doesn't load for some reason or if a link is not functioning, the site visitor shall see an error page with some generic message. The page shall have nothing in common with the rest of the site, which can make the visitor leave the site. A potential solution in this case is a function offered by some website hosting companies - the option to set up your own custom error pages which shall have identical layout as your website and that can contain any images or text that you'd like dependent upon the particular error. There are four common errors that may occur and they involve the following so-called HTTP status codes - 400, when your web browser sends a bad request to the server and it cannot be processed; 401, if you're supposed to log in to see a web page, but you have not done so yet; 403, if you don't have a permission to see a specific page; and 404, when a link that you've clicked leads to a file that does not exist. In each of these cases, visitors shall be able to see your custom content instead of a generic error page.

Custom Error Pages in Hosting

You will be able to set up custom made error pages for all of your sites with ease when you use any of our Linux hosting services. This could be done from the Hosted Domains part of the Hepsia CP, offered with all accounts and once you go there, you could set your custom pages independently for any domain or subdomain. You have to upload the files to your account before you start and enter the links to them during the process. This function can be de-activated at any time and the options you'll be able to select from are a standard page from our system or a default Apache server page. Custom error pages may be set with an .htaccess file too. The file should be put in the domain or subdomain folder and it should contain some system code and links to the pages. If you are not tech-savvy, you could copy the whole content needed for the file from our Help section.

Custom Error Pages in Semi-dedicated Hosting

All of the semi-dedicated hosting which we provide support tailor-made error pages and it will not take more than a couple of mouse clicks in your Hepsia web hosting Control Panel to use this functionality. The option is included in the Hosted Domains section of your CP in which you will need to enter the links to the custom-made files via very simple drop-down menus and a time and effort saving interface. Of course, you must upload them inside your account before that. In case you don't need to use this function at some point, you can disable it just as quickly and select an Apache server page or a default page from our system to be displayed if your visitors encounter an error. If you'd like to, you may also use an .htaccess file to activate the customized error pages. The file needs to contain a particular line of code and a link for every error type and you can easily discover an example of the whole content for all four error types in our Help section.
